This We Must Do

The last two days have been difficult for me.  On Monday morning as the school day was just beginning at Chardon High School, a student identified as T.J. Lane began shooting teenagers.  Today we understand that three of those who were shot have died.

Leap across the country to Southern California where police are investigating the death of Joanna Ramos.  She died of blunt force trauma to the head that happened during an after school fight over a boy.

These two incidents have got to get our attention.  We have to realize the responsibility for our schools.  They are the mission field in our communities.

Today I met with a youth pastor in southeastern Indiana.  We talked about his community and his ministry at the church he serves.  We began talking about the opportunities he has at the schools where his students attend.  Then he told me that he is not allowed to step into the school during the school day.  He has served that community for more years than the High School principal or the School Superintendent.  There has never been an issue, but he is still not allowed to enter the building during the school day.

A woman from his church said she wanted to help the students, but did not want to volunteer with them on a regular basis.  So he challenged her to pray.  She started a prayer group that meets every Monday morning across the street from the High School.  He told me; “God is working on that campus because those people are praying!”

We have 779 High Schools and Junior Highs in Indiana.  They all need several groups like this one to pray consistently for the students, teachers, and administrators. Please, for the sake of the Kingdom, for the sake of the 495,000 students in the state of Indiana; 1. Go to http://everyschool.com/, 2. Adopt a School in your community, and 3. Pray!
